Nissan GT-R will return to Nürburgring in April
March 4th, 2009 Posted in Nissan
Nissan Australia Managing Director, Dan Thompson confirmed that Nissan will be returning to the Nürburgring for a new assault on the Nordschleife in April 2009. He made the announcement as part of his speech during last Friday’s media day at the Melbourne International Motor Show.
His comments were also repeated in the press release announcing the Nissan GT-R as the official Safety Car for the Australian V8 Supercar series.
“Just this week we heard about a new plan by the GT-R team to return to Germany’s Nürburgring in April where the GT-R already holds a lap record for the fastest production car at the circuit – a scorching 7m 29 secs. And with the latest 2009 GT-R now in play, Nissan’s Chief Test Driver Toshio Suzuki will have his sights set on an even faster lap time,” said Thompson.

I wonder if Porsche will be there with scrutineers or if they will just try to discredit the run again…

Maybe Porsche is faster, but there’s still something very fishy about their claims. According to them:
1) The claimed time for their driver (a chassis engineer not a race driver) is a few seconds outside of a sizzling lap by former world rally champion and a ‘ring legend.
2) Slick tires can share 25 seconds off the Nissan’s time
3) Also Driver Republic did an independent piece where their test driver posted a faster time their hotshot Porsche driver could in the Nissan. On a single lap on a track described a ’so wet you couldn’t stand up on it”

First off, the GT-R is not the fastest production car on the ring by any means. ZR-1, Enzo, MC12, CCX, CGT and so on are all faster.
And the 3rd remark in Johns post, Chris Harris of DR didn’t say that the track was “so wet you couldn’t stand up on it”. Where did you get that from? It was slightly damp in some places but other than that pretty much completely dry.

Yes Martin, I did think that Dan Thompson’s quote was a bit cheeky!
I’d forgotten about the CGT time, too, thanks for the reminder.
